After the first day of hearing appeals at the Election Commission (EC) against the Returning Officer's decisions, 51 candidates have had their nominations reinstated to run for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.
Besides, The EC ultimately rejected the appeals of 15 candidates while directing three others to submit additional documents, keeping their hopes alive in the race for the election.
The appeal hearings that began at the auditorium of EC headquarters in the capital's Agargaon area will continue until January 18. A total of 645 appeals were filed.
Dhaka-9 independent candidate Tasnim Jara and Cox's Bazar-2 Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad are two of the widely known candidates who were declared valid by the EC.
On the other hand, Brahminbaria-1 candidate SAK Ekramuzzaman's candidacy was rejected as one MA Hannan of Bangladesh Nationalist Party challenged the returning officer's decision.
The appeals of 70 candidates will be heard from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm today (Sunday).
Following the submission of nomination papers by candidates, Returning Officers rejected 723 nominations last month. Subsequently, 645 appeals were filed with the EC, challenging these rejections, while some appeals were also lodged against nominations that had initially been deemed valid.
