Md Aabid Hussain, a Nepali student from the 48th batch of the Pharmacy Department, is contesting the upcoming (JUCSU) polls as the first foreign candidate.
Abaid is contesting for the position of Secretary of Social Welfare and Human Resource Development, at the Jahangirnagar University Central Student Union (JUCSU) elections. Born and raised in Nepal, Aabid completed his secondary education at Shree Beng Sha High School and later pursued his higher secondary studies at National Infotech College in Birgunj.
In 2018, he enrolled at Jahangirnagar University under the 2018-19 academic session to pursue his bachelor's degree in pharmacy. Settling into a new country was challenging, yet Aabid quickly adapted, embracing both the academic rigor and the vibrant cultural landscape of Bangladesh.
Alongside his academic pursuits, he has served as Treasurer of the Bangladesh Pharmacy Association, JU branch, playing a key role in overseeing various developmental initiatives of the organisation.
Sharing his vision, Aabid said, "I have previously worked with the Lions Club and Red Cross Club, contributing to social welfare. Over six years in Bangladesh, I embraced the culture, traditions, and hospitality here. Student representation is crucial to address gaps in leadership programmes, career workshops, dormitory facilities, health services, counseling, transportation, and reading rooms."
"When I first joined JU, I was impressed by the facilities and infrastructure, but many resources were not fully utilized. If elected, I intend to work on improving these issues to ensure that students can benefit optimally," he added.
Aabid also highlighted his participation in recent anti-fascism movements, stressing that student engagement is essential for meaningful change. "Your support will make me more responsible and effective, Insha'Allah," he said.
Conversations, debates, and discussions revolving around the polls scheduled for September 11, 33 years after the last one, echo the leafy lanes and serene quads of the university and amidst all the buzz, the Nepali student's story is quietly capturing attention. His candidacy represents a new milestone for Jahangirnagar University, showing that a foreign student can work to meaningfully contribute in campus politics and social development, paving the way for an inclusive leadership.
