Speakers at a seminar have described Abrar Fahad as a symbol of Bangladesh's sovereignty and a beacon of anti-hegemonic consciousness.
Abrar, a BUET student, was brutally killed by leaders and activists of banned Chhatra League inside a hall in 2019.
They made the remarks while speaking at a seminar titled "Indian Hegemony and Bangladesh's Sovereignty: In Memory of Shaheed Abrar Fahad," organised by the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) at the RC Majumdar Auditorium of Dhaka University on Tuesday.
They said Shaheed Abrar Fahad is not just a name or an individual, he has emerged before the new generation as a symbol of national sovereignty and resistance against aggression and hegemony.
Presiding over the seminar, DUCSU Vice President Abu Sadiq Kayem said, "Shaheed Abrar Fahad has rekindled spirit of the nation's youth. From his protest and resistance, we have learned how to speak out against hegemony."
Abrar's younger brother, Abrar Faiyaz, said, "Abrar Fahad does not represent any single political party or group. He represents our sovereignty. "
Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho, said, "We will not honour Abrar only because he was martyred, but because he showed us the vision of a new Bangladesh." The seminar was inaugurated by Abrar Fahad's father, Md. Barkat Ullah. Among others, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abdur Rob, vice-chancellor of Manarat International University and Daily Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman also spoke.
