The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will verify the wealth information provided in the affidavits of candidates for the upcoming national election if the Election Commission (EC) sends a request.

ACC Director General Md Akhter Hossain said this while talking to reporters at a regular press briefing at the ACC headquarters in the city on Monday.

He said the ACC is alert so that candidates cannot provide false information in their affidavits, as happened in the past.

The commission will review affidavits if information is received from different sources, reports are published in the media, or if the EC requests an investigation.

Legal action will be taken accordingly.

The ACC DG said that if the Election Commission wants, the ACC will cross-check the information mentioned in the affidavits, including candidates’ declared assets and money, to see whether they match the reality.

He also noted that the media can play a supporting role in this process.

The current interim government has announced that the next national parliamentary election will be held in February, following the demands of political parties.

Preparations for the polls are now underway.

Meanwhile, political parties including the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, the Nationalist Citizen Party (NCP) and others have already started their election campaigns.

The BNP on Monday announced its candidates for 237 constituencies, Jamaat earlier selected 300 candidates, and NCP, along with several other parties, have already selected their candidates unofficially but are yet to announce them.
