Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman has announced that he will resign from his post to contest in the upcoming national election as a BNP candidate from the Jhenaidah-1 constituency.
"I will contest as a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary election. I have sought my party's nomination from the Jhenaidah-1 constituency," he said while addressing a press briefing at his office on Wednesday.
"I am still serving as the attorney general, but I will resign from the position when the time is right," he added.
Asaduzzaman said he was hopeful of receiving the party's nomination.
In response to a question about who might succeed him, he said, "Whom the government feels suitable will be appointed as the next attorney general."
Asaduzzaman, a former human rights affairs secretary of the BNP, was appointed the attorney general on August 8 last year by the president.
The BNP has unveiled a list of 237 potential candidates for the upcoming election, but the name of Asaduzzaman is not there.
