Two people were killed during clashes over a dispute between two factions of Awami League (AL) in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as Manik Mia, 55, and Kalpana Begum, 32, according to local news portals. Manik Mia was a member of the Chanderkandi union council and Kalpana Begum was a former woman union member.
Besides, 10 other people were also injured in the clashes in the Methikanda-Najarpur area of the Upazila over establishing dominance, Raipura Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Jabbar said.
Citing locals, police said supporters of Raipura Jubo League leader Abid Hassan Rubel and municipal Awami League Vice President Harun Or Rashid have been embroiled in a power struggle in the area for a long time, reports bdnews24.com.
The two sides clashed in the morning over the longstanding feud and Kalpona was shot amid the violence and died on the spot.
During the clash, Rubel’s uncle Manik took refuge at the home of Bashir Uddin, the union council member from Ward No. 9. Harun’s supporters hacked him to death in the courtyard of the house.
Both of those killed were supporters of Rubel.
“There have been factional clashes between the two sides since dawn,” said OC Jabbar. “We have learnt that two people have been killed and several others injured. Police are at the scene. Details will be available once an investigation is conducted.”
