Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the government of resorting to attacks on its leaders and activists across the country.

"The dummy government of Awami League (AL) has resorted to brutal attacks on BNP leaders and activists, so that none could protest against its (AL) misrule," he noted in a statement on Wednesday.

Condemning and protesting the brutal attacks, he said BNP leaders and activists came under brutal attacks by police and ruling party stalwarts across the country while they were demanding immediate release of detained party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in separate peaceful rallies in districts and metropolitan cities on July 1 and in the capital on June 29.

"I have no words to condemn this kind of attacks on our party leaders and activists. AL is the example of barbarism, cruelty and inhumanity."

Mirza Fakhrul noted that AL cadres resorted to brutal attacks on party's forest and environment affairs secretary and Rajshahi City Corporation former mayor Mosaddeq Hossain Bulbul, acting convener of Natore district BNP Shahidul Islam Bachchu and others at a rally in the district sadar on July 1.

The ruling party cadres also launched attacks on the cars of BNP leaders while they were moving to join a rally in Patuakhali for release of Khaleda Zia. The brutal attacks left several BNP leaders injured, including joint convener of Jubo Dal of Kolapara upazila under Patuakhali.

The secretary general said police and AL cadres confined BNP leader Shamimur Rahman Shamim at Bagerhat district BNP office on July 1.

He also mentioned attack on BNP leader of Duptara Union of Araihazar upazila under Narayanganj on July 1.

Plainclothes police took away former joint secretary of Chhatra Dal central committee Marjuk Ahmed Al-Amin from the capital's Shishu Hospital area. So far no trace of him has been found.

Besides, senior joint convener of Krishakdal of Kaliganj upazila under Satkhira was taken away from his house by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on June 30, who is still untraced.

Dhaka College Chhatra Dal vice-president Atiqur Rahman Russell was picked up by the DB police on July 1, but no trace of him has been found so far.
