Allow Eid holidays for RMG workers in phases: Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has urged owners of readymade garment factories to ensure Eid-ul-Azha holidays to readymade garment workers in phases.

The road, transport and bridges minister made the call to Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) during an online briefing from his official residence on Saturday.

Quader also hoped that garment owners will set an example this time by paying workers’ salaries before Eid, reports UNB.

He urged the authorities concerned to take steps in stopping movements of goods laden trucks, covered vans for three days ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Vehicles carrying agriculture, industrial and export items, medical equipment, relief, fuel, medicine, food, perishable products and other emergency services, will be out of this restriction, he added.

He also informed that CNG filling stations will be kept open for 24 hours eight days before and after the Eid.

Quader also urged the owners not to operate unfit vehicles for carrying sacrificial animals.

Besides protecting livelihoods during Eid-ul-Azha, Quader urged all to maintain social distancing and health guidelines to be safe from coronavirus infections.

About the allegation against landlords of being inhumane to tenants including students, jobless poor people, Quader urged them to be sympathetic towards each other during this pandemic.
