Monjila Jhuma has become the latest National Citizen Party (NCP) leader to pull out of the upcoming parliamentary elections, adding to a series of withdrawals from the youth-led party.
Despite having collected nomination papers for the Khagrachhari constituency, Jhuma, the NCP’s central committee organiser for the southern region, announced her decision to withdraw in a post on her verified Facebook account late on Sunday.
The move was confirmed by the NCP’s Khagrachhari District Convenor Mohammad Nur Alam, bdnews24.com reports.
In her post, Jhuma said she had been nominated by the party to run from the Khagrachhari constituency under the party’s “Shapla Koli” symbol, and that the nomination papers were collected on her behalf on Dec 24.
“With tomorrow being the final day for submission, I informed NCP Convenor Nahid Islam of my decision earlier today. I will not be contesting the election,” she wrote.
She added that while she was stepping aside, she believed young people would eventually make their way into parliament.
Attempts to contact her for further comment were unsuccessful.
Nur Alam said the party would later brief the media on the reasons behind Jhuma's decision.
A lawyer by profession, Jhuma currently serves as a member of the Khagrachhari District Council.
