BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has remarked that “April is not suitable in any way” for the general election.
The BNP senior leader made the remarks to the media after presenting floral wreaths at the grave of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 11:30am on Eid Day on Saturday.
He said, “The time that has been set (April) is not the right time for elections in Bangladesh. Here (April) you will see extreme heat, storms and rain… that time is right after Ramadan… there are public exams. We do not think that this timeframe has been thought out very much.”
“In addition, the election campaign will have to be conducted during the month of Ramadan, which will be difficult. Our Standing Committee decided on our remarks last night and they gave their opinion. We think that it is possible to hold the election in December and that will be the most suitable for the nation.”
Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus announced that the general election will be held in the first week of April 2026 in an address to the nation on Friday, reports bdnews24.com.
Fakhrul said, “We gave our reaction yesterday. We have always said that we wanted the elections by December… those are the expectations of the people.”
“The expectations of the people have not been fulfilled.”
At 11:30am, Fakhrul along with Standing Committee Members Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed and AZM Zahid Hossain paid tribute by placing wreaths at the grave of Ziaur Rahman and later participated in a special prayer service seeking the eternal peace of the late leader.
The party's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, members of the BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council, and other central leaders were also present.
Before she was sent to jail in 2008, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia would visit Ziaur Rahman's grave every Eid. In the absence of the chairperson, the party's secretary general and members of the Standing Committee pay homage at the grave of the party's founder.
Fakhrul said, "On behalf of the party, Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, I wish our countrymen a happy Eid."
"On this day, we seek truth through sacrifice and we want to reach closer to the Almighty Allah... This day (Eid-ul-Azha) truly teaches us to sacrifice, teaches us to love people, teaches us to build a better world."
