A Dhaka court on Thursday rejected bail to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a case filed over an attack on the Chief Justice’s residence during BNP’s grand rally on October 28, 2023.
A judge of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka passed the order after hearing his bail petition.
Earlier, a High Court bench and two subordinate courts rejected his bail in the case.
Lawyers Md Asaduzzaman and Syed Zainul Abedin Mesbah appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the BNP leader.
Later, Syed Zainul Abedin Mesbah said a total of 11 cases were filed against BNP Secretary General over political violence centring BNP’s grand rally on October 28 last year. Among the cases, the BNP leader has already secured bail in 10 cases.
The lawyer said at least 15 accused have secured bail so far in the case filed over the attack on the Chief Justice’s residence.
On January 17 this year, Mirza Fakhrul was granted bail in one case filed with Paltan Police Station in Dhaka. Earlier on January 10, a Dhaka court granted him bail in nine cases filed with Paltan and Ramna Model Police stations.
Mirza Fakhrul was arrested on October 29 last year in connection with the case filed with Ramna Police Station over the attack on the residence of the Chief Justice. He has been in jail since then.
His lawyers repeatedly argued in court that any aged and sick person is entitled to get bail according to the Criminal Code of Procedure.
Earlier on January 10, an HC bench rejected his bail petition in connection with the case. The High Court bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin discharged a rule regarding granting bail to Fakhrul in the case after holding a hearing on the matter.
On October 29 last year, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rashidul Alam and on November 22, Metropolitan Sessions Judge in Dhaka, Faisal Atiq Bin Quader, also rejected his bail petition in the case.
