Awami League's repressive rule fuelled Jamaat's resurgence: Mirza Fakhrul

The rise of Jamaat-e-Islami is a consequence of the Awami League’s repression of opposition parties over the past 15 years, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said.

His remarks came while speaking to journalists at his residence in the Kalibari area of Thakurgaon town on Friday morning, bdnews24.com reports.

Mirza Fakhrul was elected from Thakurgaon-1 with the paddy sheaf symbol in the 13th general election. BNP candidates also won the other two constituencies in the district.

Responding to a question about Jamaat’s rise, the BNP leader said: “This has happened as a result of 15 years of fascist rule. It’s a science, a part of political science.”

“Whenever democracy is suppressed and people’s voices are gagged, regressive forces tend to emerge. That’s what has happened in this country.”

He added, “Whatever rise Jamaat has seen today is because of the Awami League. Their repressive rule -- not allowing opposition parties to carry out activities or contest elections -- has led to this situation.

“I’m really confident that people in Bangladesh have already rejected them (Jamaat). BNP has won an absolute majority. People will be able to prevent misdeeds or evil tendencies through proper, honest and people’s welfare based politics.”

Mirza Fakhrul said the landslide victory came because people accepted the BNP’s pledges, reform proposals and 31-point agenda for state restructuring.

On the formation of a national government, he said: “We have always remained steadfast in our commitments. We said those who joined us in the movement against fascism and those who were with us in contesting the election—we will, Inshallah, form the government taking them along.”

Asked about the implementation of the July Charter, the BNP secretary general said: “The parts of the July Charter that we signed will be implemented on a priority basis. Our 31-point agenda will also be implemented gradually.”

Referring to Jamaat winning more seats in Rangpur Division, Mirza Fakhrul said there were various reasons behind it. “In greater Dinajpur, however, Jamaat did not win a single seat. There are three districts and 11 constituencies in greater Dinajpur, and the BNP won those seats.

“We are hopeful that if we can interact with the people and work politically and in an organised manner, we will certainly be able to curb this trend.”
