The Bangladesh Labour Party has been officially registered with the Election Commission (EC) with the pineapple symbol following a court order.
On Thursday, party Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran collected the registration certificate from EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.
Iran said the party had initially applied for registration ahead of the 2023 general elections, but its application was rejected after scrutiny by the then EC.
“After a prolonged legal battle in the High Court, we received a favourable ruling on May 29. Following the submission of the court’s order to the current EC, we’ve navigated through various complexities to secure the registration today,” he said.
The Labour Party is currently part of a joint movement with the BNP. In the 2018 general election, Iran contested the Pirojpur-2 seat under the BNP’s paddy sheaf symbol.
He added that the Labour Party aims to introduce a “new direction” in politics and will soon announce some candidates. The party’s registration number is 56.
According to the registration certificate, the EC has registered the party in compliance with the Representation of the People Order (RPO) following a High Court ruling.
Earlier this year, the Bangladesh Minority Janata Party also received registration by court order.
