BNP leader Nabi Ullah Nabi sent to jail after remand

A Dhaka Court on Tuesday sent Nabi Ullah Nabi, joint convener of Dhaka south city unit of BNP, to jail after the remand in a case filed under the Explosives and Special Powers Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury passed the order on Tuesday in a case filed with Jatrabari Police Station under the Explosives and Special Powers Act.

Ashraful Alam, sub-inspector of Wari Zonal Team of Detective Branch of police, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the BNP leader before the court and pleaded to keep him in jail.

On January 6, Nabi was put on a three-day remand.

According to the case statement, Nabi Ullah Nabi, accompanied by other BNP leaders and activists, occupied the paved road in front of BGB Market on the route between Jatrabari intersection and Dholaipar under Jatrabari police station on November 5, 2023.

They are accused of chanting anti-government slogans and obstructing traffic while armed with local weapons and crude bombs.

Nabi and the other accused hurled brickbats at the police to tarnish the image of Bangladesh and embarrass the government by deteriorating the law and order situation, the case statement reads.

The accused set fire to two buses of Great Turag Transport Company parked on the roadside and exploded cocktails and created riots on the road.

Nabiullah Nabi, along with 8 others, were arrested in connection with January 6 arson attack on Benapole Express train in Dhaka’s Gopibagh area that left four people dead.
