A BNP leader and his nephew have been hacked at and injured in Pirojpur’s Sadar Upazila.

The victims are former Sadar Upazila BNP convenor Mohiuddin Mallik Nasir aka Nasir Mallik, and his nephew Riaz Uddin Mallik Nipu.

The incident took place around midnight on Monday near the Parerhat Bus Stand in Indurkani Upazila, said Pirojpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Nasrin Jahan.

Nasir Mallik is the son of Modahar Mallik of Shankarpasha village in the Sadar Upazila. Riaz Uddin Mallik Nipu is the son of Shahjahan Mallik, bdnews24.com reports.

Citing locals, police said a group of attackers arrived on several motorcycles and suddenly launched an assault with sharp weapons, leaving both victims seriously injured. Locals rescued and took them to Pirojpur District Hospital. After primary treatment, doctors referred them to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Former joint convenor of Pirojpur Jubo Dal Badiuzzaman Sheikh Rubel said, “We rushed to the hospital after hearing about the incident. This attack was carried out with an intention to kill. Such attacks after the election are nothing but post-election violence.”

Physician Rajib Paik of Pirojpur District Hospital said both victims sustained deep injuries in different parts of their bodies. After initial treatment, they were sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Additional SP Nasrin Jahan said, “We have inspected the scene. The motive behind the attack and the identities of those involved have yet to be confirmed. The matter is under investigation. Further details will be provided later.”
