Senior leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday welcomed the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman upon his arrival in Dhaka after a decade and a half in exile.

The party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and members of the party’s standing committee greeted Tarique with hugs and flowers at the VIP lounge of the airport, marking his long-awaited return to the country.

Tarique Rahman exchanged greetings with the leaders, while he was formally welcomed with flower garlands by Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, mother of Dr Zubaida Rahman. He later spent some time at the airport lounge talking with relatives present in the country.

Marking his homecoming, the BNP arranged a mass reception at the 36 July Expressway (300 Feet Road) area in Purbachal, Dhaka.

A large stage measuring 48 feet by 36 feet has been built using bamboo and wood on the north side of the Kuril intersection, facing south.

Tarique Rahman is scheduled to travel from the airport to the reception venue in Purbachal with his family and party leaders. He is expected to deliver a brief address, thanking party leaders and activists and expressing his gratitude to the people of the country.

After the programme, he will visit BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at Evercare Hospital before returning to his residence in Gulshan-2 via the Airport Road and Kakoli intersection.
