The BNP has swept Gopalganj, winning all three parliamentary constituencies in Sheikh Hasina’s home district.

The results mark a dramatic shift in a region long regarded as an Awami League fortress.

Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Md Arif-uz-Zaman announced the final results at 2:30 am on Friday following the completion of the tally, bdnews24.com reports.

In Gopalganj-1, covering Muksudpur and part of Kashiani, BNP candidate Selimuzzaman Molla has clinched 68,867 votes for the “paddy sheaf” symbol, defeating Gono Odhikar Parishad nominee Md Kabir Mia, who garnered 53,961 votes.

The seat was held for six consecutive terms since June 1996 by retired lieutenant colonel Faruk Khan, former commerce and industry secretary of the Awami League.

In Gopalganj-2, covering Gopalganj Sadar and parts of Kashiani, BNP candidate KM Babar won with 40,048 votes. His closest challenger, BNP rebel and independent contender MH Khan Monju, received 33,039 votes for the “deer” symbol.

This constituency had been dominated since 1986 by Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Sheikh Hasina’s cousin, who won the seat eight times.

In Gopalganj-3 (Tungipara and Kotalipara), BNP’s SM Zilani has secured 60,166 votes, outpacing independent candidate Gobinda Chandra Pramanik, who polled 33,867 votes.

Hasina had held this seat seven times since 1991.
