As part of BNP’s liaison committee’s ongoing discussions with like-minded political parties on the next election, the party held a meeting with the leaders of Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Sunday.

BNP Standing Committee Members Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and Vice Chairman Barkatullah Bulu joined the meeting on behalf of BNP. Meanwhile, a 10-member BJP delegation, led by its Chairman Andalib Rahman Partha, participated in the talks.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury urged the interim government to promptly unveil an election roadmap after formulating a national charter based on the reform proposals on which political parties have reached a consensus.

“People must be reassured that the country is moving towards elections and the restoration of democracy,” he added.

Regarding liaison committee’s ongoing discussions, he said, “We have successfully initiated the political culture of having dialogues among political parties which was absent for many times. We have to talk to each other (political parties) on issues, and this meeting was part of the culture.”

The BNP senior said there would be different opinions but all must respect the differences.

He also described the concept that everyone must agree on everything as a Baksal-like notion.

“Different parties will have different philosophies, different thoughts and there will naturally be differences of opinion,” he said.

Echoing Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Andalib Rahman Partha said reform proposals won’t be implemented without consensus.

“We may have disagreements. But elections can be held after completing those proposals on which everyone give consent,” the BJP leader said.

Putting stress on announcing a clear roadmap on election, he said, “The country cannot go ahead in an uncertain state. I think the people now demand an electoral roadmap without further delay. I believe this government should now focus on that.”
