Bin Yamin Molla, central president of the Bangladesh Students' Rights Council (BSRC), has been on a hunger strike for over 52 hours, demanding a clear roadmap for the long-pending DUCSU election, justice for slain Dhaka University (DU) student Shammo, and installation of CCTV cameras in and around the university's campus.
He began the strike at 1:00 pm on Wednesday (21 May), staging a sit-in in front of the DU vice-chancellor's residence.
Later, Mahtab Islam, joint convener of BSRC's DU unit, and Jamal Uddin Khalid, convener of Swadhin Bangladesh Chhatra Sangsad, also joined the hunger strike in solidarity.
Leaders and activists from various student organisations-including Islami Chhatra Shibir, Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad, and Islami Chhatra Andolon-along with several general students, have expressed solidarity with their demands.
Bin Yamin Molla has already fallen ill, reportedly suffering from a fever.
Despite his present condition, he expressed his firm stance- continuing the strike until the demands are met.
"The university administration has contacted me for discussion, but no effective solution has been offered yet," he said.
He also alleged that a certain group is trying to obstruct the DUCSU election to serve their own interests. "The administration must clarify why the election is being delayed," he added.
