Doctors in Bangladesh and abroad are working in tandem to oversee the treatment of BNP chief Khaleda Zia, says senior party leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The BNP secretary general remarked in response to a question from the media at an event marking Dr Reza Kibria's joining the BNP at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Monday, reports bdnews24.com.

“As you know, Madam [Khaleda] is sick, and our doctors are working, trying with everything they have. Her treatment is being overseen jointly by doctors in the country and abroad.”

"We, alongside the entire country, are always praying to Allah to make her well, so that she may come back to us after overcoming her illness."

The 79-year-old former prime minister has been admitted to Evercare Hospital since Sunday. After tests there, the BNP said that her condition was critical as she was diagnosed with an infection in her lungs. Since Thursday, doctors have been providing intensive medical care to Khaleda in the Critical Care Unit (CCU).

She is being treated under a medical board consisting of local and foreign doctors under the leadership of Evercare Hospital specialist Prof Shahabuddin Talukder.

The board also includes Khaleda’s daughter-in-law, Dr Zubaida Rahman, doctors from Johns Hopkins University in the United States and The London Clinic in the United Kingdom.

Her eldest son and BNP Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, is in constant contact with the medical board from London and is also coordinating communication with local and foreign doctors.
