The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) has revoked the lifetime membership of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The decision was made on Wednesday night during DUCSU's second executive meeting. DUCSU Vice President Shadik Kayem confirmed the matter following the meeting.
Sheikh Hasina was granted lifetime membership of DUCSU in 2019, a decision that has since drawn criticism from many quarters.
Speaking about the decision, VP Shadik Kayem said, "In 2019, Sheikh Hasina was made a lifetime member of DUCSU through a proposal that violated the union's constitution. It was completely undemocratic and unlawful. In today's general meeting, that controversial proposal has been officially cancelled."
The meeting, held at the DUCSU Conference Room, was presided over by Dhaka University Vice Chancellor and DUCSU President Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan. All members of the DUCSU executive committee were present at the session.
