Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Tuesday said the Election Commission (EC) will set up a central cell to tackle rumours surrounding the upcoming national elections in the wake of artificial intelligence (AI).
"The misuse of AI has become a pressing global concern. We have planned to establish a central cell to address misinformation and disinformation," he said at a seminar on Tuesday morning at the Election Training Institute (ETI) in Agargaon, Dhaka.
"Like any tool, AI can be used for good or bad-a doctor may use a knife to save lives, while robbers may exploit it to commit offences," he added.
The CEC urged experts and participants to provide concrete and practical recommendations to counter misinformation in the upcoming national elections, emphasising the need for a robust 24-hour monitoring system.
The seminar, titled "Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Upcoming National Parliamentary Election to Counter Misinformation and Disinformation", was organised by the EC's IDEA and CBTIEP projects. The CEC and four election commissioners attended the event.
In his opening remarks, Nasir Uddin said the EC is working to integrate AI to prevent misuse and ensure greater transparency in the electoral process. He stressed that the system must be capable of detecting and responding to false or misleading information even in the middle of the night.
