BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday urged the interim government not to hurriedly pass two major laws, warning that such moves by a non-elected administration can obstruct the country’s democratic process.
In a statement, he said, “We have learned from reliable sources that the current interim government is trying to hurriedly pass two laws—one is a revised draft of the Police Commission Ordinance, 2025, and the other is a law related to NGOs.”
Fakhrul said BNP fears there are “other motives” behind pushing these laws just before the national election, which can obstruct the country’s democratic transition.
He stressed that it will not be appropriate for an interim government without a public mandate to pass such important laws in haste.
“We believe it will be more appropriate to enact the above-mentioned laws through proper debate in the next National Parliament. We urge the government to refrain from taking such steps,” Fakhrul said.
