Four-five motorcycles attacked Hasnat's car while stuck in traffic: Police

Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organiser of the Nationalist Party (NCP) (south), was attacked when his car was stuck in traffic, police said. The incident took place at Chandana Chowrasta area on the way back from Gazipur Agricultural University around 7pm on Sunday.

Police and witnesses said four or five motorcycle-borne miscreants carried out the attack, according to local media.

Leaders and activists of NCP and anti-discrimination student movement in Gazipur district called for an immediate protest procession in protest of the incident. Leaders and activists brought out a procession in Chandina Chowrasta area at 9pm. 

Later in the night, a torch procession was taken out at the same place.

NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah went to Gazipur Agricultural University with a white microbus on Sunday afternoon. His driver was Md. Dulal Mia.

He said Hasnat Abdullah had gone to the Agricultural University for personal work. From there, he was going to Gazipur a little before evening. Since then, several motorcycles have been following them. After crossing Chandana Chowrasta, some stones were thrown from the motorcycle and the glass of the car was broken. The glass was also hit with a stick.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Zahid Hasan said that Hasnat Abdullah was returning to Dhaka from Gazipur Agricultural University area in Salna. The miscreants came on four or five motorcycles and attacked his car while he was stuck in a traffic jam in Chandana Chowrasta area. He was hit in the arm, and the car's glass and windshield were broken.

Police official Zahid Hasan said the glass of Hasnat's car was broken in the attack, cutting his elbow in several places. He said Hasnat's motorcade took shelter at the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) campus in Board Bazar area after leaving the place as soon as possible.

After getting details from him, he was taken to Uttara East Police Station. From there, another police car took him safely to Dhaka at around 8:30 pm.

An investigation has already been launched to find the attackers.
