The Gono Forum, led by Kamal Hossain, signed Sunday the July National Charter two days after initially refusing to do so at a ceremony held in the Parliament complex due to disagreements over constitutional wording.

With this latest development, 25 political parties and alliances have now signed the July Charter.

Gono Forum's Acting President Subrata Chowdhury and General Secretary Dr Md Mizanur Rahman signed the July Charter on behalf of the party at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in the capital on Sunday.

Prof Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, urged those who have not yet signed to do so.

The National Citizens Party (NCP), Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), BSD (Marxist), and Bangladesh JSD did not attend the July Charter signing ceremony held on Friday and did not sign.

On Friday, Gono Forum attended the July Charter signing ceremony at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building but did not sign the charter.

The General Secretary of Gono Forum later explained that they had not signed because they had not received the final copy of the amendment to Article 150 of the Constitution and the clarification of the exclusion in the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Schedules of the Constitution.

They eventually signed after receiving the final copy.

Prof Riaz urged those who have not yet signed the July Charter to do so, emphasizing that they are important partners in this commitment.

He highlighted that the document was a result of discussions, suggestions, amendments, additions, subtractions, enlargements, and refinements, and that the July Charter represents a political commitment resulting from the collective efforts of everyone involved.
