Govt plunders mosquito control fund, Mirza Abbas tells rally

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas on Thursday said the government did not take any effective steps to control mosquitoes but looted public money meant for the purpose.

"No effective initiatives are in place to combat mosquitoes. When I was the mayor of Dhaka, I purchased non-adulterated medicine from Singapore and successfully controlled mosquitoes."

Mr Abbas said this at a brief rally, chaired by Dhaka south unit BNP convener Abdus Salam, after distributing leaflets at wards 04 and 05 in the capital.

Whatever measures the government has taken to kill mosquitoes are just to loot public money, he claimed.

"Most of the members of police are tainted. A section of judges are now talking in political language, which is not expected (by people)," said Mr Abbas.

"Muslims believe in accountability in the hereafter. Judges would have to give their accounts first and then the turn of prime ministers, ministers and others would come," he uttered.

People usually go to the court when they are in trouble. If they do not get expected remedy, where would they go?" questioned the senior leader.

An estimated 30,000 people were abducted during the period from 1972 and 1975, he alleged, saying his friend Babul was also abducted at that time.

According to Mr Abbas, today's Awami League is also doing the same thing.

Not only for supporting BNP, he said, trouble might befall anyone for utter anything against the government.

He said people could not afford to lead a decent life due to soaring prices of essential commodities.

"Today, deputy commissioner (DC) wants vote for Awami League. Politically biased officials are being posted in the administration before the elections."

"So, a free, fair and participatory election won't be possible under the present administrative set-up. The prime minister must be resigned and parliament be dissolved…," demanded Mr Abbas.
