Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Vice-Chairman Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed alleged on Saturday that the government was running the country remaining loyal to India.

He made the comment while addressing a discussion titled 'Unprotected Independence, Human Rights, Bangladesh without democracy and the way forward' organised by Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddah Dal at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the city.

President of Muktijoddah Dal Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat presided over the event which was moderated by Sahabuddin Reza.

"It has become a habit of the present government to maintain a subservient foreign policy to a foreign country and seek their opinion on every matter," said Mr Hafiz.

"Their (ruling Awami League) general secretary Obaidul Quader said as Delhi is with them so they are also with them (India). They (AL) don't feel even an iota of shame," he continued.

He said, "This government will remain in power as long as Delhi is with them. Imagine how they expressed their loyalty to that neighboring country shamelessly.

"Did we fight for our independence for this reason,? he questioned.

"Did we fight (during 1971) just to get out ourselves from Rawalpindi and to get under Delhi? Never. The freedom-loving people of Bangladesh will never accept this," he said.

"We don't advise people to eat berry instead of dates during iftar. Today people's life is unstable due to soaring prices of essential commodities," he continued.

"It is our promise that our struggle for restoring democracy will never fail. Misrule must be ended by the new generations of the country who would be able to establish democracy and voting rights," he said.

Member of BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council Zainul Abdin Farroque, joint secretary general of the party Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, information and research affairs secretary Riaz Uddin Nosu and general secretary of Muktijodda Dal Sadeq Ahmed Khan were present, among others, at the discussion.
