Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain have gathered at the Kakrail and Matsya Bhaban areas to demand that he be sworn in as the mayor of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Activists of the party and supporters of Ishraque have staged regular protests to push for the demand since May 13.

On Tuesday, the protesters announced that they would escalate their demonstrations if he was not sworn in by 10:00 am on Wednesday. The Dhaka South City Corporation Employees Union had also announced that it would suspend all civil services in the DSCC area if the demand was not met, according to a bdnews24.com report.

Ishraque’s supporters left the area in front of the Nagar Bhaban after their deadline passed. They then took up positions in the Kakrail and Matsya Bhaban areas.

Rasel Mahmud, one of Ishraque’s supporters, said: “We gave them until 10:00 am today, but the government has not taken any steps to meet our demand. That is why we have taken up positions in different areas today. We will not let up until our demand is met.”
