It doesn't seem Bangladesh is an independent country, says Mirza Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that it didn't seem that Bangladesh was an independent country rather it seemed that an expansionist government was weighing on the country.

He came up with the comments at an iftar mahfil organised by a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalist (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalist (DUJ) at the National Press Club in the capital.

He said that the whole nation was now passing through a tough time.

He also said that the present government had destroyed all the state institutions and democracy.

He blamed the government for controlling the mass media.

Mirza Fakhrul said that their movement did not fail rather it was becoming stronger day by day.

President of the BFUJ faction Ruhul Amin Gazi presided over the event.

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Mia Golam Parwar, standing committee members of BNP Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, secretary general of the BFUJ faction Qader Gani Chowdhury, president of DUJ Md Shahidul Islam and general secretary Khurshid Alam were present, among others.

Meanwhile, in a statement he condemned and protested the demolition of party founder Ziaur Rahman's mural on the top of Zia Hall by miscreants at Chashara in Narayanganj.

In the statement issued on Friday, he said that the country was now being ruled by a government of vindictive mentality and usurper.

He blamed the government for taking away people's democratic, voting and other citizen rights.

He said that Shaheed president Ziaur Rahman was not only a heroic freedom fighter in the field and sector a commander but also one who had introduced multi-party democracy in the country.

He termed the Awami League government extremely vindictive as the ruling party by using their cadres has demolished Zia's mural.

"The ruling Awami League not only destroyed the democracy but also weakened the country's national freedom and sovereignty," he said.

"Our heard earned national independence got insulted through demolition of the mural," he said.

"The ruling Awami League is an evil power of anti- liberation. The government started playing a vindictive game against the opponents as they have utterly failed to run the country," he continued.

He demanded immediate arrests of those involved with the demolition of Zia's mural and give them exemplary punishment.
