Jamaat candidate for Chattogram-9 Fazlul’s nomination scrapped over dual citizenship

The returning officer has rejected the nomination paper of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate AKM Fazlul Hoque for the Chattogram - 9 constituency for holding dual citizenship.
The nomination was cancelled during the scrutiny by the constituency’s returning officer and Divisional Commissioner Zia Uddin on Sunday.
Executive Magistrate Hedayet Ullah of the Chattogram Divisional Commissioner’s Office told bdnews24.com, “AKM Fazlul Hoque said that he had applied to renounce his dual citizenship. However, he failed to produce any complete documentary proof of the renunciation. As a result, his nomination paper has been cancelled.”
Among Chattogram’s 16 constituencies, Chattogram - 9—including Kotwali and Bakalia police station areas of the city—is considered a prestigious seat. The BNP candidate in this constituency is Abu Sufian, former convenor of the party’s South District unit.
A total of 12 candidates submitted nomination papers for this seat, including Jamaat and BNP aspirants.
Although Fazlul held US citizenship, he claimed in his affidavit that he had renounced it on Dec 28.
