Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has filed a petition to the Supreme Court to review and reverse the ruling that revoked its registration as a political party.
The appeal was filed on Sunday, Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir told the media, reports bdnews24.com.
The party has moved the Chamber Court to revive its ‘dismissed for default’ petition to revive its registration, he said.
A total of 25 persons, including Bangladesh Tarikat Federation’s Secretary General Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, Zaker Party Secretary General Munshi Abdul Latif, and Sammalito Islami Oikya Jote’s President Ziaul Hasan filed a writ petition challenging Jamaat’s registration on Jan 25, 2009.
The bench of High Court justices M Enayetur Rahim and Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque cancelled the registration of Jamaat in the verdict of the appeal on Aug 1, 2013.
The top court dismissed an appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami seeking a freeze on the High Court verdict on Aug 5 of that year.
The Election Commission issued a notice cancelling Jamaat’s registration in 2018 after the full verdict of the High Court was published.
The Jamaat filed a petition following the publication of the full verdict. A six-strong bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, threw out the appeal in November 2023, as the party’s main lawyer was not present at the hearing.
