A youth leader of the BNP camp has been shot inside a party office in Khulna city, leaving him critically injured.
Another man was also wounded when he tried to intervene, police said on Thursday, bdnews24.com reports.
The incident took place around noon at the office of Ward No. 9 BNP in Putimari Bazar under Jalma Union, said Labanchora Police chief Syed Mosharraf Hossain.
The injured, Masum Billah, 33, is president of the Putimari Bazar committee and a local Jubo Dal leader.
The other injured was identified as Jahid Masum. Both of them were sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses and police said Masum and Jahid were sitting inside the office when a local man, known only as Parvez, allegedly involved in criminal activities, entered the room.
An argument reportedly broke out, and a gunshot was heard shortly after.
Parvez then left the scene.
Locals later found Masum with a bullet wound to his left leg and Jahid injured in his right hand, and rushed them to hospital.
Officer Mosharraf said Masum and Parvez were previously known to each other and had a dispute inside the office.
“Parvez later brought a pistol from outside and shot Masum. Jahid was also injured while trying to save him,” he said.
Police said Parvez has multiple allegations of criminal activities in the area and efforts are under way to arrest him.
