JUCSU election: 179 candidates, seven panels in contest

The final list of candidates for the upcoming Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) election has been published, with 179 contestants cleared to run for 25 posts, representing seven panels.

The announcement came at a press briefing at the Senate Hall of the old administrative building, where JUCSU Election Commission Member-Secretary Prof Dr AKM Rashidul Alam briefed journalists.

This year's JUCSU polls will see seven panels competing alongside a significant number of independent candidates.

The panels include: Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Islami Chhatra Shibir, Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS), the Swatantra Shikkharthi Sammilan led by Abdur Rashid Jitu, Sompritir Oikya (Unity of Harmony), an alliance of left-leaning student organisations, 'Songsoptok' formed by a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Chhatra Front, and an independent platform led by Mahfuzul Islam Megh.

JCD finalised its panel with Sheikh Sadi Hasan for vice president (VP) and Tanjila Hossain Boishakhi for general secretary (GS).

Islami Chhatra Shibir, contesting under Samannito Shikkharthi Jote, nominated Arifullah Adib for VP and Mazharul Islam for GS.

BGCS, under the Shikkharthi Oikya Forum, fielded Arifuzzaman Uzzal for VP and Abu Touhid Mohammad Siam for GS. Swatantra Shikkharthi Sammilan nominated Abdur Rashid Jitu for VP and Shakil Ali, injured during July protests, for GS.

Among left-leaning groups, two separate panels have emerged. The 'Songsoptok' panel, formed by a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra Union and Chhatra Front, nominated Jahidul Islam Imon for GS and Sohagi Samia as joint general secretary (female). Another leftist panel nominated Amartya Roy for VP and Nur E Tamim Srot for GS. Meanwhile, an independent panel has been announced under Mahfuzul Islam Megh.

According to the list, 10 candidates will contest for VP and nine for GS, six for joint general secretary (female), 10 for joint general secretary (male), nine for education and research secretary, six for environment and nature conservation secretary, eight for literature and publication secretary, eight for cultural secretary, eight for assistant cultural secretary, five for drama secretary, and three for sports secretary.

Additionally, six candidates each will contest assistant sports secretary (female and male), seven for information technology and library secretary, eight for social service and human resource development secretary, seven each for assistant social service and human resource development secretary (female and male), seven for health and food security secretary, and seven for transport and communication secretary.

Besides, 16 candidates will compete for three reserved executive member posts for female students, while 26 candidates will vie for three executive member posts for male students.

A total of 46 female candidates are contesting for various positions, including two GS aspirants.

As per the schedule, campaigning began on Friday and will continue until midnight of September 9, while polling is set for September 11 from 9 am to 5 pm.
