Krishak Sramik Janata League President Abdul Kader Siddique has pledged to uphold independence no matter what “ups and down” come along the way.
He said, “No matter what ups and downs come, we can protect our independence. It’s our misfortune that we couldn’t raise our children properly.”
Speaking to the media after paying tribute at the National Memorial on Tuesday on the 54th Victory Day, he said: “We could achieve independence, but the overall spirit needed to uphold independence, and working together with everyone – we have many flaws there.”
“Deviation and mistakes exist. But that doesn’t mean our independence is meaningless. If this independence wasn’t achieved, those chanting slogans today couldn’t even have done that.”
If independence was not achieved, the government that “existed a few days ago” could not be toppled, he said. “However, independence did not reach to the doorsteps of those it was meant for.”
In response to a question on the electoral environment, he said: “People in the country want a fair election, and the Hasina government fell because there wasn’t a fair election. Otherwise, Sheikh Hasina’s government wouldn’t have met this cruel ending.”
“However, what we see the Yunus government doing now, the people he rubs shoulders with–they are not even (believers in) Bangladesh. They are probably not even 25 percent of Bangladesh. Hence, we’ll definitely contest the election if there’s an overall electoral environment. But we won’t take part in a fake election.”
