Key role of police is to ensure fair polls: Home adviser

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday said that the most crucial role of police (now) is to ensure that the upcoming national parliamentary election remains free, fair, and impartial.

"In the electoral field, you (Bangladesh Police) are not just law enforcement. You are the symbol of the public's security, trust, and democratic rights," Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury further said.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a special crime review meeting held at the Hall of Pride conference room at the police headquarters in the capital.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam chaired the event.

Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury emphasised that the law must be upheld not just through force, but also with "justice, integrity, and humanity".

"No police member should side with any political party, grant or accept special favours, or consider themselves a political worker," he said while strictly cautioning officers against political bias.

He urged Bangladesh Police force to establish a standard, which will be praised both domestically and internationally.
