National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam has formally announced an “electoral understanding” with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami as the country approaches the parliamentary elections.
Speaking at a media briefing at their Bangla Motor office in Dhaka on Sunday night, Nahid said they engaged with Jamaat and eight like-minded parties to ensure a fair and competitive national election and referendum.
“Based on these discussions, we have reached agreement on an electoral understanding,” he said.
He explained that the arrangement serves a dual purpose: “Firstly, to navigate the electoral threshold, and secondly, to maintain unity in the reform, justice, and anti-hegemony movement.”
Nahid emphasised that the media briefing was held to communicate this significant party decision before the February elections.
Earlier, the party had declared preparedness to contest in the election independently. However, Nahid’s announcement on Sunday confirmed the alliance with Jamaat.
Earlier in the day, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman confirmed NCP’s integration into the eight-party coalition, now including 10 parties with LDP in the fold as well.
