Tajnuva Jabeen, a senior leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has resigned from the youth-led political group amid reports of a potential alliance between the party and Jamaat-e-Islami.
She announced her decision in a Facebook post at 12:35pm on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.
Tajnuva had been serving as a joint convenor of the NCP. Her resignation comes a day after the party’s senior joint member secretary Tasnim Jara also quit the party and said she would contest the upcoming election as an independent candidate.
In her post, Tajnuva said she had planned to resign after an official announcement of the alliance but decided to step down sooner after becoming convinced the deal had already been finalised.
"Let me repeat: my resignation is not only because of the alliance itself, but more because of the process through which it was formed. Distrust and a lack of confidence are the main reasons.
“If the party had grown and become established on a larger scale, perhaps compromises could have been considered. But from the very beginning, the idea seems to have been that first we must enter parliament, and then the organisation would grow around the few MPs who emerge from that. What a strange situation.”
She also said she would not be contesting the upcoming parliamentary election, adding: "What hurts the most is that my mother is arriving from Chattogram today to support my election campaign, and on this very day I have been forced to make this decision [to quit the NCP].
"I know many people are deeply upset by my decision. But this is what is right for me."
