A delegation of the National Citizen Party (NCP) met with the visiting International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission team on Friday at the Intercontinental Dhaka for a courtesy and policy discussion.
The NCP delegation thanked the IMF for its continued support to Bangladesh during this crucial period and for providing a clear reform roadmap. The party noted that these reforms are essential for the country’s sustainable development, according to a statement issued on Friday.
During the meeting, the IMF raised concerns over Bangladesh’s GDP growth, revenue mobilisation, revenue-to-GDP ratio, distressed assets, and youth unemployment.
NCP representatives acknowledged these challenges and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing revenue digitalisation, supporting ongoing financial-sector reforms, and addressing issues related to the slow implementation of some reform measures.
The discussion also covered the rise of kleptocracy under the previous regime, its impact on the economy and governance, and the structural measures needed to prevent such corruption in the future. Other topics included reducing the size of the informal economy, ensuring good governance and transparency, and facilitating a smooth and peaceful transition of power from the interim government to an elected government.
Both sides expressed optimism about building a more resilient Bangladesh, powered by the hard-working and determined people of the country.
IMF representatives Chris Papageorgiou, Mission Chief for Bangladesh; Maxim Kryshko, Resident Representative, Dhaka; and Tawhid Ilahi, Deputy Secretary and Economic Analyst, attended the meeting.
NCP representatives included Javed Rasin, Joint Convenor and Lead, Industry and Commerce Cell; Md Sultan Mohammed Zakaria, Lead, Foreign Affairs Cell; Alauddin Mohammad, Joint Member Secretary and Co-Lead, Foreign Affairs Cell; Abdullah Al Mamun Faisal, Organiser and Co-Lead, Industry and Commerce Cell; and Md Abdullah Al Faisal, Joint Chief Coordinator and Member, Industry and Commerce Cell.
