The National Citizen Party (NCP) has dismissed media reports suggesting that the group was preparing to join forces with other political parties as part of a coordinated movement.
Describing such reports as "misleading", the party's Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb said: “The NCP has not yet taken a decision on any alliance or simultaneous movement.”
“The news of a simultaneous programme of eight parties on four demands is misleading.”
Formed by leaders who had been active in the July 2024 Uprising, the NCP has been at the forefront of political discourse in recent months.
But the party has faced internal strains after its poor showing in the recent student union elections at Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University.
Some members have resigned, and voices from the left-wing circle have raised the possibility of leaving the party.
“The party is disappointed after not getting the desired results in the DUCSU elections,” NCP Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar said.
“However, there is no fear of anyone leaving the party. Work is currently under way to restructure the party and clarify its political position.”
Adeeb acknowledged that informal discussions had taken place with other political groups on issues such as the July Charter and calls for a new Constitution through Constituent Assembly elections.
But he rejected reports that the NCP supported full proportional representation.
“Rather, the NCP only agrees on the issue of PR in the upper house,” he said.
He added that the party would also support demands to suspend the Jatiya Party’s organisational activities, describing it as an “accomplice of terrorists and fascism”.
Office Secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat said senior leaders were currently focused on organising courtyard meetings.
He added that he had received no information suggesting that members were preparing to leave the party.
