Just three days after its formation, the coordination committee of Nalitabari upazila unit of National Citizens’ Party (NCP) in Shepur has been postponed on various allegations, including the inclusion of the fallen Awami League (AL) members.
Alamgir Kabir Mithun, joint coordinator of the district unit of the party and in-charge of the upazila, said they had to suspend the committee after the allegations of the inclusion of the AL men surfaced.
Besides, he said, some names were mistakenly included in the list, prompting a revision that led to the committee’s suspension.
On the night of June 19, a 31-member committee was announced for the upazila and it was signed by Central Member Secretary Akhter Hossain and Chief Organizer of the northern region Sarjis Alam.
After the announcement of the committee, several issues began circulating on social media, including the use of individuals’ names without their consent, incorrect designations and the inclusion of people known for their affiliations with rival political parties.
Apprentice lawyer Sharmin Akter expressed outrage over her name being listed without her knowledge, further compounded by an incorrect title that identified her as “Advocate Samia Sultana Sharmin.”
Many others, including Zubayer Ahmed, an assistant teacher at Gachhgara Government Primary School; Rakibul Hasan Rocky, sports secretary of the upazila unit of Jubo League; and Sanjay Roy, known for his active involvement with the Awami League, were also named in the committee without their consent.
Several netizens questioned the inclusion of such people, labelling the committee a platform for “rehabilitating Awami League members and its affiliates.”
Engineer Md Likhan Mia, chief coordinator of the party’s district unit, told reporters, “In light of several complaints, the central committee has suspended the Nalitabari unit. Until further notice, the activities of the party’s Nalitabari unit will be conducted under the supervision of the district unit. A new committee will soon be formed with promising young individuals with a clear image.”
