The National Citizen Party (NCP) has suspended its joint member secretary Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir of all party duties over allegations of interfering in the appointment of a deputy commissioner and the printing process of textbooks by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB).

Tanvir has been asked to respond to the allegations within seven days and explain why he should not be permanently expelled from the party.

The action came just 24 hours after the formation of NCP’s central disciplinary committee, in line with a decision from its third general meeting.

Tanvir, a controversial figure within the party, had previously faced internal and external scrutiny over his activities.

According to a notice sent to Tanvir, NCP cited a report published by the Daily Inqilab on Mar 11, which accused him of illegally influencing the recruitment process for a deputy commissioner and profiting from commission deals related to NCTB textbook paper contracts.

“You are hereby directed to provide a written explanation to the head of the central disciplinary committee within the next seven days,” read the notice signed by committee convenor Md Nahid Islam and member secretary Akhter Hossen.

“You must also explain why you should not be permanently expelled from the party,” it added.

“Simultaneously, due to your repeated disregard of earlier verbal warnings, and in order to preserve organisational discipline, you are relieved of all party responsibilities until the final disciplinary report is issued,” the letter said.

Tanvir told bdnews24.com that he had received the notice and welcomed the party’s decision.

“In light of the allegations, I respect the party’s move. I will respond to the notice soon,” he said.

On Sunday night, NCP’s first-ever disciplinary committee was formally approved by Nahid and Akhter.
