National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Wednesday warned that the party will “resist” if immediate action is not taken against corrupt officials still working inside the Election Commission (EC).

He issued the warning after a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, UNB reports.

“There is still a lack of trust in the Election Commission. Many corrupt officials from the previous regime remain in their positions,” Nahid Islam told reporters.

He added that the election schedule should be announced only after assessing the political environment and overall stability.

NCP Chief Coordinator Nasir Uddin Patwary alleged that “a particular political party is putting pressure on the court and luring smaller parties into alliances in an attempt to undermine multiparty democracy.”

He further said the EC must consider the ongoing political crisis and the deteriorating health of Khaleda Zia before announcing the election schedule.

Earlier in the day, NCP officially received its registration certificate from the Election Commission. Nahid Islam accepted the certificate from Akhtar Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat.

The party’s Chief Coordinator Nasir Uddin Patwary, Joint Convener Khaled Saifullah, and Joint Member Secretary Zahirul Islam Musa were present during the handover.

Recognized as the first student-led political party in Bangladesh, the NCP emerged from the July 2024 mass uprising and was formally founded on February 28, 2025.
