National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam and Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary have responded to show-cause notices issued against them by returning officers for alleged violations of the electoral code of conduct.
The notice followed alleged campaigning in favour of a “Yes” vote in the referendum before the official canvassing period began.
Their representatives submitted the responses at the returning officer’s office in Segunbagicha around 2pm on Monday, according to Information Officer Tanjim Hasan Hridoy.
Speaking to bdnews24.com, Tanjim said: “Nahid Islam’s response was submitted first, followed by the response on behalf of Nasiruddin Patwary.
“They have provided explanations regarding why they utilised specific symbols and party logos during the referendum campaign.”
Another official said that, alongside their explanations, both leaders have filed applications to have the show-cause notices withdrawn.
“In their written submissions, they requested the cancellation of the notices and provided assurances that they would not violate the electoral code of conduct in the future.”
Nahid is a candidate for the Jamaat-led alliance in the Dhaka-11 constituency, while Nasiruddin is contesting the Dhaka-8 seat.
In accordance with the schedule for the parliamentary election, the returning officer issued notices to them on Sunday, seeking an explanation for launching a campaign in favour of a “Yes” vote in the referendum before the official commencement of the campaign period.
They were asked to submit their written responses on the breach of the code of conduct on Monday, either in person or through a representative.
