Patuakhali-1 lawmaker Shahjahan Miah passes away

Md Shahjahan Miah, a member of parliament from Patuakhali-1 constituency, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 83.

The former state minister for religious affairs breathed his last at 6:00 am on Saturday at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka.

A BSS report said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound shock and sorrow at the Md Shahjahan Miah.

In a condolence message, the premier said Shahjahan Miah was a devoted leader of Bangladesh Awami League and he faithfully discharged various responsibilities of the party, including President of Patuakhali District unit Awami League.

"At his death, the party lost a skilled politician and I lost a loyal political comrade," she said.

The premier prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

According to bdnews24.com, Shahjahan had been suffering from various old-age complications for a while.

He is survived by his three sons and a daughter.

Born on Jan 17, 1940, Shahjahan became an influential politician in Patuakhali, serving as the president of the district Awami League from 1991-2019.

He was elected to parliament for the first time in 1996, before winning the Patuakhali-1 seat again in 2008 and 2018.

Following his victory in the 2008 election, he was appointed as the state minister for religious affairs.

Shahjahan, who was also a lawyer by profession, held the position of president of the Patuakhali Lawyers Association for several terms.
