The country's people must shape its future as no one from the outside world like the US, China or India can help or punch to make it, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
"Bangladesh is ours; we must build its future. Trump from the US will not decide it, or even if Xi Jinping from China comes, they will not do it, or even Modi from India will not be able to push to do anything (in the country). We have to do this in our hearts," he said.
Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks at a programme styled 'Empowering Bangladesh: Pathways to Leadership, Unity, and Growth' organised by North South University (NSU), in collaboration with Bangladesh Empowered (BE), on the NSU campus on Saturday.
"Everyone is saying, so much bloodshed, so many mothers lost their children-what will be the end result? I firmly believe that the end will be very good. Because we, the people of Bangladesh, have always fought for good and have won," he went on, saying that "whatever Bangladesh has achieved today, it is all because of the youths".
Highlighting the marginalised people of the country, Mirza Fakhrul said no one talks about them.
"Our farmers, workers and hardworking people, discrimination is for them, the entire discrimination is there," he added.
He also expressed concern over the imposition of US tariffs.
"If this cannot be resolved, we will face greater danger. I think if we can bring forward farmers and those involved in agriculture, provide them with work, and provide them with new technology, we will be able to overcome the problems very quickly," he emphasised.
Urging everyone to unite, Mirza Fakhrul said, "Let us all work together, there are problems, and the problems will be solved. Many have already gone. I would like to thank Professor Yunus for taking the responsibility (Chief Adviser).
"I also believe that he will be successful. Let us all help him and help ourselves. But one thing is, there is no alternative to democracy and democracy can never be imposed-it has to be practiced," he added.
The conference brought together distinguished leaders, scholars, and change makers to discuss the critical issues for shaping Bangladesh's future. Prof Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, vice chancellor of North South University, presided over the conference.
