Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that well-planned attempts have begun to postpone the national election and deprive people of their voting rights.

The BNP leader, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bangkok, said this while joining a joint meeting via video conference to chalk out a series of programmes to mark the 44th death anniversary of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman.

"A black shadow is looming over the new opportunity that has created in exchange for the blood of thousands of students and general people to establish democracy and to form a truly fascism-free Bangladesh. Planned attempts have begun to deprive the people of their rights to vote," he said.

Mirza Fakhrul commented that a group has started the politics of division, and attempts are being made to create division. A conspiracy has started to bring various government institutions to stand against each other and people.

Stating that infiltrators in the government are trying to destabilise the country, the BNP secretary general further said, "Some people, who have infiltrated the government, are trying to take Bangladesh in a different direction."

He called on every leader and worker of the party to remain alert and stand against any conspiracy.

Before his speech, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced a series of programmes to commemorate the 44th death anniversary of the party's founder Ziaur Rahman.

The programmes, scheduled from May 26 to June 2, were declared at a news conference after a joint meeting of the party and its affiliate organisations at the BNP chairperson's office in the capital's Gulshan area on Tuesday.

Rizvi said since the Eid-ul-Azha would be celebrated on June 7, the programmes have been shortened.

The programmes include paying tribute to Ziaur Rahman, holding discussions, organising mass prayers at mosques, food distribution among needy people, etc.

The BNP flag would remain at half-mast and black flags would be hoisted at party offices across the country.

On May 30, 1981, Ziaur Rahman was shot dead by a group of soldiers at the Chittagong Circuit House while he was the president.
