Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has reduced the use of lights and air-conditioners in his office room in the Secretariat in the interest of saving power.

He has also urged all ministries and other organisations to be economical in their consumption of power.

Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon said the prime minister took these steps after arriving at his office at the Secretariat on Thursday morning, bdnews24.com reports.

“He came to his office at 9:10 am and immediately switched off 50 per cent of the lights in his room and set the air-conditioner temperature to 25.1 degrees, which reduces electricity consumption,” Rumon said.

“Not only that, upon entering the Cabinet Room for a cabinet meeting, the prime minister also instructed that half of the lights in the room be switched off and the air-conditioner temperature be raised.”

Building No. 1 of the Secretariat houses the Prime Minister’s Office along with the Cabinet Division and several other departments under the prime minister.

The press aide said following the prime minister’s initiative, half the lights in all rooms at the office were immediately switched off and the air-conditioner settings were reduced.

He added that the prime minister has urged everyone to use electricity sparingly at all ministries at the Secretariat, government offices across the country, private buildings, shopping malls and other establishments.

“The prime minister also advised people to reduce the use of lights during the daytime and instead open curtains or windows at homes and offices to make use of natural sunlight,” Rumon said.

He added that the prime minister asked the minister for power and energy to take appropriate steps to ensure efficient use of electricity and to seek expert opinions on what further measures could be taken.
