Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina once again on Thursday called on the ministers and members of parliament not to field their relatives as candidates in the upcoming upazila council elections, clarifying that by ‘relatives’, she specifically meant their ‘children and spouses’, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Friday.
Many of the candidates who are either children or spouses of ministers and lawmakers have already started withdrawing from the polls. There is still time for others to do the same, even beyond the designated timeframe, he told a press conference at the Awami League president’s office in Dhaka city’s Dhanmandi.
Regarding his brother’s candidacy in the upazila polls, he said that neither the party nor he supports his brother’s candidacy. Therefore, it cannot be stated for sure that his brother will not withdraw eventually.
