BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Thursday said that the proportional representation (PR) system in the next national election, as demanded by some political parties, will not be suitable in the current situation of Bangladesh.
"There is a PR system existing in many countries. But the system will not be suitable in the current socioeconomic, political and geological circumstances in Bangladesh. Who is going to vote for whom it is important to the voters and the country's people have the right to know it," he added.
He made these comments while addressing a Janmashtami programme through videoconferencing at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the city on Thursday.
There are different opinions on the PR system among the political parties, which is the beauty of democracy. However, it is possible to solve all problems together this way, he believed.
He also said the disagreement should not go to that height that the fallen fascist takes benefit from it.
"We all don't necessarily agree on everything but we have to keep agreeing in the fight against the fallen fascist," he went on.
Although the government is talking about elections in February, the new conditions and proposals of various parties around the elections are creating questions in the public mind.
Tarique Rahman alleged that the runaway dictatorship is conspiring in various ways, thinking that BNP will come to power if there is a fair election.
He also said that some parties are also doing politics to stop the BNP.
Tarique Rahman warned that those who are trying to confuse the situation ahead of the elections are creating obstacles in the path of transition to democracy.
The acting chairman of BNP also called for caution so that no one can do politics by capitalising on religious identity.
He sought the support of followers of traditional religions in the next election.
He said that there were attacks on religious minorities in the past. Except for two or three incidents, most were politically motivated to create anarchy. He emphasised unity of all regardless of political, religious and ethnic identity.
