Prosecution submits formal charge in Ashulia body burning case

The ICT prosecution on Wednesday submitted formal charge against 16 individuals in a crimes against humanity case filed over shooting six youths and burning their bodies during the 2024 July uprising.

Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim placed it to the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) in Dhaka after a prosecution team at first filed the formal charge at the office of the ICT registrar.

Upon a hearing, the ICT-2, headed by its Chairman Justice Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, took the formal charge into its cognizance and scheduled July 13 for the next hearing.

The tribunal also asked the authorities concerned to produce the eight accused of the case before the court on the next hearing date. Being accused in other cases, they have already been arrested.

It also issued arrest warrants against eight other accused, including former lawmaker Muhammad Saiful Islam and former deputy inspector general of police Nurul Islam, as they are absconding. The tribunal further asked the police to submit a compliance report on the issue.

The other accused in the case include--- former additional superintendent of police (crimes and ops) Md Abdullahil Kafi, former additional superintendent of police (Savar circle) Md Shahidul Islam, former officer in-charge AFM Sayed, former detective branch (DB) inspector Md Arafat Hossain, former assistant sub-inspectors (SIs) Abdul Malek, Arafat Uddin, Sheikh Abzalul Haque, Bishwajit Saha, Kamrul Hasan, and former constable Mukul Chokder. Eight of the accused have been arrested so far. Seven of them were produced before the tribunal on Wednesday.

The investigation agency of the ICT filed the probe report in the case on June 19.

According to the prosecution, police members in Ashulia on August 5, 2024, allegedly shot and killed six youths and put their bodies into a police van.

The van was then set ablaze in an attempt to make it appear as though the protesters had torched the vehicle, resulting in the deaths.
